A Bit of Golf History
If you’ve read Carnage from the Cursed Crown, then you know that one of the characters is an avid golfer. I’ve never actually played, but I enjoyed learning a bit more about the game!
Many people know that golf originated in Scotland, but did you know it has been around since the 15th century? James II, King of Scots, banned the game in 1457, because it was distracting people from learning archery! Forty-five years later, James IV lifted the ban, when he became a fan and player of the game. Mary, Queen of Scots played golf and it was during her reign that the famous course at St. Andrews was built. Both men and women played in Scotland. There were even some all women leagues, but it wasn’t until Queen Victoria and Prince Albert came to love Scotland and built Balmoral Castle that Scottish culture, including golf, began to spread across the whole of the United Kingdom.
In the area where I’ve placed Tallenford Priory there have been golfers for over 400 years! The first official club and course in the area was formed in 1832 and is still operating today.
