London’s great river runs as dark, dirty, and deep . . . as murder.

The Duke and Duchess of Sedwick and their small band of friends and family are recovering from some serious losses. They are slowly making steps to get back to normal routines when they receive a cry for help from one of their own. The Waif’s Wardrobe, a charitable place of good works, has encountered tragedy. A good friend is involved and asking for their intervention.

With some reluctance, they agree, but what they uncover is one secret after another.  Kara and Niall follow the clues into a labyrinth of lies, blackmail and good works gone wrong, until a complex picture of the victim is revealed, as well as the chilling realization that the undercurrents of the situation—and the danger—go far deeper than they appear.

Reviews

Five stars - I love the thoughtfulness of these people. They are always aware of the money and class differences and inevitably offer a hand or job or meal. They don’t just solve a mystery, they enrich the people they meet.
Plus they solve the mysteries without the modern technology and science that we know.
A wonderfully rich storytelling with intricate details to help visualize a world 200 years in the past.
Breathtaking and smart.

Five stars from the beginning to the end, a few surprises along the way, some scenes that will pull your heart strings, and others that make you laugh out loud. And some that will melt your heart into a puddle of goo. A definite must read if you’ve been following the series, and if not, it is time to start at the beginning.  Ms. Marlowe crafts a tale that satisfies all your reader needs and yet leaves you craving the next one

Five stars. The way that the romance and mystery are perfectly interwoven and it progresses so beautifully together is amazing.. I love all the side characters as well. I loved the mystery in this one, it was so good and the path of discovery to the who and why was perfect. I loved how the clues were laid out and discovered.

5 stars - I particularly enjoyed this story, especially its tantalizing ending. I cannot wait for the next book to see where these characters go. I’ve especially loved the books since Kara and Niall married, and I hope there are many more to come. I hope you’ll give this author, this series, and this book a try—they are all excellent. Happy reading!

For fans of historical mysteries with a dash of romance, this series delivers intrigue, suspense, and pulse-pounding danger. Though you can read this book on its own, reading the earlier books adds extra depth to the characters and their relationships.
