Welcome to the Historical Romance Cookie Hop!

Peanut Butter Kiss Cookies have been a favorite at our house for a long time.  But I've been on a gingerbread kick lately, so I'm making the Gingerbread Kiss Cookie version this year.

Gingerbread has been around a long time.  It was a staple often sold at medieval fairs.  Early recipes were heavy and included ground almonds, breadcrumbs, rose water, sugar and ginger.  Sometimes it was pressed into a mold to resemble royalty or religious figures.

But did you know Queen Elizabeth I was known as the first to have cut out gingerbread figures?  The story is that she concocted a lighter batter by replacing flour for the breadcrumbs and adding eggs and spices.  She had her kitchens cut and decorate biscuits to resemble dignitaries of her court, and served them up as a surprise.

The idea caught on and young English women would eat gingerbread 'husbands' at Christmas to ensure they would find the real thing.  Gingerbread houses became popular with the publica
tion of Hansel and Gretel in 1812 and we've been carrying on the gingerbread tradition ever since!
